Acupuncture: New Patient Information

Welcome and congratulations on making the CHOICE to improve your health naturally with acupuncture and massage techniques.

Rest assured that we are FULLY qualified, insured and licenced practitioners, who want nothing more than to help you find the best way to improve your health and well-being, allowing you to live your life to the fullest.

Please read this carefully, before your consultation. Ask your practitioner if there is anything that you do not understand.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. Some practitioners also use a smoldering herb called ‘moxa’ to warm these points.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side effects are very rare – less than one per 10,000 treatments.

Does acupuncture have side effects?

Whilst acupuncture is safe in with Paula, a degree qualified practitioner, who CHOOSES to be regulated by the British Acupuncture Council, and who upholds the licensing requirements set out by the Scottish Government, managed by Glasgow City Council.

it is important you are aware of some minor side effects immediately after your treatment:

  • A sense of drowsiness MAY occur immediately after the session, in a very small number of patents, if affected please do not drive. Most feel like they have JUST woken up after the session, go for a walk around the block, or stop somewhere for a drink, bite to eat before setting off on your journey (of course you can also wait within the clinic if you prefer!).
  • Minor bleeding or bruising occurs after treatment in about 3% of treatments
  • pain during treatment occurs in about 1% of treatments.
  • Existing symptoms can get worse after treatment (less than 3% of clients). You should tell your acupuncturist about this, but it is usually a good sign.
  • Fainting can occur in certain people, particularly at the first treatments

In addition, if there are particular risks that apply in your case, your practitioner will discuss these with you.

Is there anything your practitioner needs to know? Apart from the usual medical details, it’s important that you let your practitioner know:

  • if you have ever experienced a fit, faint or ‘funny turn’
  • if you have a pacemaker, or any other electrical implants
  • if you have a bleeding disorder
  • if you are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication
  • if you have damaged heart valves or have any particular risk of infection.

YOU AGREE TO INFORM PAULA IF YOU SHOW ANY SIGNS OF SARS-COV-2 WITHIN 48 HOURS OF YOUR APPOINTMENT WITH HER. AND UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR NAME AND NUMBER MAY BE PASSED ON TO THE ‘TRACK AND TRACE’ SHOULD THE NEED ARISE.

What to Expect

The initial session is split between an online consultation and a follow up in person session.

The online part includes detailed questioning on the reason you are seeking support (i.e. your pain, your fertility concerns, your period problems, sleep, anxiety, digestive issues etc) as well as general questioning that follows the Chinese Medical Diagnostic tool that is the ’10 questions’. With these latter questions I am looking for the signs and symptoms that help inform my diagnosis and therefore influence the treatment, the more accurate I am with this, the quicker you will see the benefits – so please do be as honest as you can – and there is no such thing as too much detail!! Sometimes, these questions feel utterly unrelated, but please trust that I am asking for a reason! Have a wee list of any medications you take, and think about primary symptoms – what does it feel like, what makes it feel easier, worse, is there a pattern to it?

Within a few hours/days we will follow up with an in-person treatment as a ‘part 2’ of your initial session. Arrive at the start of your session. To make it easier and more effective before your treatment:

  • no caffeine for at least 3/4 hours before your treatment,
  • wear loose comfortable clothing (but not essential!)
  • try to have eaten an hour or so before arrival (a snack if its too close to meal time)
  • avoid big plans for after the treatment – try to set it up so you get to go home and get a wee hour or so to yourself.

Your treatment can include Massage, Guasha, Cupping, Moxibustion, electro-acupuncture & of course Acupuncture – I will determine what is the best combination for your health based on my diagnosis.  I will discuss in detail each of the options, discussing their benefits or any likely side effects – (the affectionate octopus look that is cupping for example!)

Your commitment.

Acupuncture (as most medicines are) is ACCUMULATIVE: this means it is VERY rare that one session is enough to magically fix you!  I will also suggest some life-style recommendations, it is OF COURSE your choice what you take on board, adjust and I will work with you where your at, without judgement

The severity of the condition being treated initially determines frequency.  If you were to scale your condition in terms of its impact on your life from 0 (no issue)- 10 (unbearable/unmanageable)

  1. 10 out of 10 – daily (or as close as we can manage until symptoms reduce)
  2. 7-9 out of ten – 2/3 treatments a week for 2-3 weeks – then reassess
  3. 5-7 out of then:  1/2 treatments per week for 1-2 weeks – and then reassess
  4. 1-5 out of 10 – 1 session a week for 4-6 weeks, then reassess.

Chronic conditions with a poor prognosis (i.e. degenerative conditions such as MS, Parkinson’s, Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia etc.) typically work best with 1/2 sessions a week for 4 weeks, then drop to weekly for another 4-6 weeks, then AS minimum 1 per month for maintenance

Wellness and Prevention typically every 4-6 weeks works perfectly.
